- Begin with a brief but descriptive anecdote
(or scene)/Return to wrap up this anecdote (or scene) in your
conclusion to provide closure. This strategy gets readers
emotionally involved, participating on a visceral level.
- Begin by creating a vivid sense of
place/Conclude by leaving readers with a vivid image that will help
them reflect on the meaning of your paper. This also gets
readers immediately involved. The scene you set can be relevant
to your discussion in a creative way.
- Begin/End with a hypothetical, imaginary
scenario. A scenario is an imagined sequence of potential
events; these are possibilities you imagine, you invent. Scenarios can
really get readers’ attention because they are usually intriguing or
unexpected or highly emotional in some way. Because they offer
readers a chance to use their imaginations, they are a great way to get
readers involved in your subject.
- Begin/End with a startling fact or
statistic. This helps to wake readers out of their
ho-hum, know-it-all, been-there-done-that complacency. When
you’re able to surprise readers with something they haven’t expected,
they’ll be likely to pay close attention. Sometimes “startling”
readers is just a matter of reporting obvious facts that aren’t well
known or acknowledged.
- Begin/end with a quotation.
Include a memorable quotation that’s either highly meaningful,
colorful, famous, or attributed to a well-known person—it can help
establish your credibility and it can sometimes challenge your readers
(in a good way) into paying close attention. Used in the conclusion, it
gives you the opportunity to leave readers with a challenge to
mull over, and it may help them remember your paper longer.
- Ask a question at the beginning/Leave your
readers with a question at the end. This involves readers
immediately by asking them to participate, to come up with an
answer. They’ll want to compare your answer to their own.
- Begin by providing necessary background
information readers may need/End by putting your discussion in a
particular context or framework. If crucial information
isn’t provided at the beginning of a discussion readers may feel lost,
like they’ve missed something. Reinforce the particular
context of your discussion in your conclusion.
- Be creative. Come up with your
own creative “hook.”
