Working with “The Five Bedroom, Six Figure Footless Life” by Peter Kilborn:
- In groups, identify the three kinds of content we discussed: objective description (the neutral, denotative picture), subjective description (the impressionistic picture), and supplemental information that helps the reader understand the subject more fully. Find at least two passages in the reading to illustrate each of these three kinds of content.
- Describe the overall dominant impression that Kilborn conveys of the Link family. What is his impression of the Links? Can you point to any particular details in the article that contribute to this overall impression?
- Is this an effective piece of writing? List your reasons why or why not.
- Answer the same set of questions for “Soldiers of Christ I” that you answered for the essay on the Link family.
- Bring at least one picture to class of any person, group of people, or any place. This can be any picture—a photo from your personal collection, or something you find in a magazine or the Internet. The picture can be of someone you know, a stranger, or a celebrity; it can be of someplace familiar to you or unfamiliar to you.
