Reviewing Elements of the Profile Essay ~~

The aims of the profile essay
- Profile essays closely observe their subject. The content
of a profile essay includes a combination of the description that
follows from that observation and any supplemental factual information
the writer can provide so that readers get both a vivid impression and
a deeper understanding of the subject.
- The writer’s observations may be freshly acquired, called up from
memory, or acquired through some form of research.
Researching means seeking information rather than impressions.
But once you have the information and you’ve had a chance to digest it
all, it’s bound to make some kind of impression on you—as you can see
in the articles you read for today.
- When it comes time to describe your observations (however you
acquired them), your use of description can be either subjective or
objective; in a profile essay, it’s very often a combination of both.
- Putting it all together: The facts and explanations you
provide about your subject have the effect of informing your readers
about your subject; the subjective ways you describe your observations
has the effect of communicating your dominant impression of your
subject, which may be exclusive to you personally. In the end,
readers should come away knowing about your subject and about your
impression of your subject. The profile is therefore, as
we’ve been saying, right smack in the middle between having an
“expressive” and an “objective” purpose—it’s a great hybrid. It’s
both informative and impressionistic.
A closer look at subjective vs.
objective description
Objective Description: words
are “neutral” or “denotative” because they aren’t likely to carry any
emotional charge. They convey information but not much feeling
about that information. They are neutral because they don’t make
you feel positive or negative about the subject they describe.
Example: “There was a long line of traffic on 322 today, probably
4 miles long, and it took me 45 minutes to get from Rt. 1 to
I-95.” Do you get any indication of how I feel about the subject?
(the traffic) Not really.
Subjective Description: words
are positively or negatively charged, or “connotative,” in that they do
convey a good or bad impression of their subject. These words
convey attitude, feeling, perspective, mood—a positive or negative
charge. Example: “There was an endless line of traffic on Rt. 322
today; the road was clogged for 4 maddening miles; I had to inch my way
for 45 minutes before I got to I-95.” No doubt how this driver
feels about traffic.
