on drafting and assembling the casebook project. The casebook

on argumentation; this week we will focus on analyzing the arguments of
others and on coming up with
debatable topics suitable for the Casebook

The final draft
of Paper #1 is due on Monday 9/26. We'll work on defiing the
goals of objective writing and explore some of the genres you can
choose to work with for your objective writing project.

We'll continue
to explore ideas related to the topic of identity, and we'll also begin
discussing the various genres of expressive writing you can choose from
to produce your first formal paper. Friday's class this week
(9/16) and Monday's class next week (9/19) are cancelled in lieu of
individual conferences in my office, Main Hall 312. If you forgot
your conference time, you can look it up here.

Welcome to
Effective Writing I. This week we're exploring the aims of the course
and some general principles that help define the essay as a
distinct form of commnunication. We'll discuss the writers's
choices revealed by considering "the rhetorical situation" of any piece
of writing.
